Emmi is my dream come true!  A simply gorgeous (and incredibly cheeky!) example of a female Finnish Lapphund, I am still pinching myself that she is really mine.

She was raised for me from birth with her brother Eppu, in Finland by Johanna Ollila, whose friendship and willingness to give so much can never be repaid.  Born on Anzac Day, Emmi left Finland just after Australia Day – a real true-blue Aussie already. She arrived into Melbourne quarantine on the 2 February and home to us on 3 March 2006.

I’m not sure at what point I decided to go through the adventure of importing a female lappie, but I can recall dancing around the office (much to the amusement of my work colleagues) on the day Matti & Riitta from Lumiturpa Kennels agreed to pick out a special girl for me. 

My interest centred on lines from their incredible Fin Ch FinW02,01 NordW-97 Lumiturpa Nörri, and the stunning Eetu (Int, Fin, Est, Pl Ch FinW-99 EstW-99 EuW-00 Lecibsin Hurmuri Hukka).  After a few false starts, I had a second dancing moment (well, actually more a moment of completely hyperventilating before I could grab the phone to ring a friend) when Riitta emailed me to let me know that the only girl puppy born from Mimmi (Nörri’s daughter) and Eetu, was mine if I liked her photos.

To say I liked her photos was an understatement!

Emmi has a beautiful feminine head with lovely small ears, great tail set, generous substance and bone, correct angulation and to die for expression.  And what an attitude!

Her family are simply churning up the show scene in Finland.  Her uncle (Mimmi’s half-brother) Int, Fin, Dk Ch V-03 V-04 PMV-06 Lumiturpa Api, the lovely young Fin Ch PMV05 Lumiturpa Otso (son of Fin Ch Lumiturpa Oikku who is the daughter of Mimmi and Eetu’s son), and Fin Ch Lumiturpa Oula (Oikku’s brother) are all frequently at the top of the the winners list.  One of the top females at the moment is Fin Ch JV-04 Lumiturpa Jäähile, daughter of Eetu and Mimmi’s half sister.

Emmi’s dam Mimmi is a volunteer search and rescue dog, being the first lappie in Finland to pass the Finnish Working Dog Federation’s Rescue Search Test.  She also competes in obedience, agility, and working tests. Mimmi has a half sister in the UK, Elbereth Taika "Magic" who very successfully competes in agility, recently gaining a 4th place in the 2005 Kennel Club British Open, and a 2nd place as part of the British B Team in the Kennel Club Nations Cup.

With lines such as this, I am hoping for big things for Emmi both in the show, obedience and agility rings, and she has certainly started in very fine form. In only three month of showing Emmi has not only been awarded Bitch Challenge in all but one show entered, and gained her Australian Championship, but has also obtained three classes in group and a class in show during that time. Very quickly she has also managed to accumulate a growing number of fans. And little wonder, this girl is quite the star!

More importantly, Emmi has completely won our hearts. I now cannot imagine life without this beautiful and crazy little girl.
